Blue is everywhere — the sky, the ocean, your favorite shirt — but for most of human history, nobody saw it. Across ancient texts from Homer to the Vedas, blue is conspicuously, bafflingly absent, and the reason why reveals something deeply strange about the relationship between language and perception.
